Gary Klaus of Howell Rescue Systems spent the morning Saturday, July 14, with 10 members of the Brookfield Fire Department showing them how to use the new rescue tools the department had recently bought from Howell. The tools include cutters, spreaders and struts used in vehicle rescues. Route 82 Auto Wrecking provided the vehicles. For many of the firefighters it was more of a refresher course because the tools are similar to ones they had used before, but firefighters noted that protocols change over time, and some techniques that they had been taught are no longer recommended. The tools were bought largely through a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, although Brookfield and Hartford paid small matches.
