David L. Lyon of Canton, Ohio, died Dec. 15, 2020, from complications of COVID-19, after battling CTE for several years. He was 70.
David was born Jan. 11, 1950, in Canton, a son of Elmer and Theo (Plantz) Lyon.
He graduated in 1968 from Canton Timken High School, where he played football and basketball and ran track.
David attended Ashland (Ohio) College on a football scholarship and, while there, earned a bachelor’s degree in education. Throughout his years of coaching at the collegiate level, he earned another bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees.
David worked in the education field for 41 years as a teacher and administrator. He coached football for 23 years, including two seasons at Brookfield High School and three seasons at Thiel College, Greenville.
David leaves behind his son Gary (Holly) Lyon of Massillon, Ohio; daughter Sarah (Ryan) Kennedy of Westerville, Ohio; and son Johnathon (Haley Rose) Lyon of St. Louis, Missouri; grandsons Aaron Best, Alex (Breanna) Lyon, Joseph Lyon and Fitzgerald Kennedy; granddaughter Sofia Lyon; great-grandchildren Myana, Alex Jr., Kayden and Maverick Lyon; brothers Gary (Lisa) Lyon and Bob (Malou) DiLoreto; sisters-in-law Sue and Barbara Lyon; and many nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Patricia Nagy, Linda Remenaric and Mary Jane Lyon; and brothers O. Thomas and Ronald Lyon.
