A Masury man charged with neglecting his mother and two dogs recently entered guilty pleas to two counts of cruelty to animals.

A charge of failing to provide for an impaired person was dismissed upon his agreement that police had probable cause to file the charge.

Brian T. Matthews, 43, of 807 Boyd St., was sentenced Aug. 1 to 2 years’ probation and a $150 fine by Trumbull County Central District Court Judge Thomas Campbell.

Eastern District Court Judge Marty Nosich sent the case to Campbell because of a conflict.

Brookfield police were called June 11 by an animal advocate who had received a report that three dogs had been caged on a porch at 807 Boyd. Police said they found the cage was too small, and the dogs did not have food or water. The dogs were taken to the Animal Welfare League of Trumbull County.

On June 14, police were called to assist the league in removing animals, and found bins of animal feces and a floor saturated with animal urine and feces in the home. Matthews’ 72-year-old mother was in a bed near the material, police said.
