A Brookfield man who pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges stemming from a fatal traffic accident in Wayne County was sentenced Nov. 30 to 6 months in jail.

Judge Mark Wiest also fined Zachary Carpenter, 29, of 5907 Stewart Sharon Road $1,000, and suspended Carpenter’s driver’s license for 5 years.

Carpenter pleaded guilty Oct. 19 to two counts of vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred Oct. 24, 2021, on Interstate 71. Carpenter was driving a box truck that crashed into a tractor-trailer that had pulled over to the side of the road, Ohio Highway Patrol said. Two passengers in Carpenter’s vehicle were killed, Nicholas P. Holmes, 30, of Girard, and Christopher Fox, 21 of Youngstown.

Carpenter was injured and was transported to a hospital.

Carpenter was arrested Oct. 31 on charges of vehicular assault and domestic violence filed by Vienna police, who alleged that Carpenter hit a woman with his vehicle in the 4300 block of Warren Sharon Road, police said. He pleaded guilty or no contest Jan. 12 in Girard Municipal Court to assault and was sentenced to 90 days in jail to be served at the same time as his state sentence.
