Brookfield Fire Chief Keith Barrett is retiring effective Sunday.

Township Trustee Ron Haun said trustees accepted Barrett’s retirement resignation Friday. Barrett has been in ill health.

“I think he’s served the township for the past 40 years to the best of his ability,” Haun said.

According to the department web site, Barrett was appointed chief in 1982. During his tenure, the fire department added emergency medical service to its fire and rescue duties.

Trustees appointed Fire Capt. Dave Coffy as interim chief, Haun said.

A search committee will be appointed, probably including chiefs of neighboring departments, to advise in the naming of a new chief, Haun said.

“We don’t want to rush it, and we don’t want to slow it down,” he said. “We want to do the right thing. Everything’s always about making the township better.”
