The driver of a sport-utility vehicle with five occupants that crashed into a ditch and caught fire Oct. 19 was drunk, Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Kinkaid X. Tumpkin, 23, of 748 Brookfield Ave., Masury, was charged with drunken driving and failure to control. Tumpkin pleaded not guilty to the charges at his Oct. 23 arraignment and was released.

The SUV was northbound at 2:41 a.m. in the 1200 block of Collar Price Road SE when it swerved to avoid an animal, police said. It went off the right side of the road, into the ditch, and hit a fire hydrant.

The fire spread to the surrounding woods but didn’t get far, said Brookfield Fire Chief David Masirovits.

Taken to local hospitals by Brookfield or Vienna ambulances were Bryce C. Jefferson, 20, of 1215 Webster St., Farrell; Kalaurie Elhady, 19, of 449 Watson St., Sharon; and Markeis A. Hughes, 24, of 282 Orchard St., Sharon, officials said.

Three of the five occupants of a minivan that crashed and caught fire this morning, Oct. 19, were taken to hospitals, Brookfield Fire Chief David Masirovits said.
Ohio Highway Patrol investigated the crash, but a dispatcher said Friday morning she had no information on it.
The crash was called in at 2:27 a.m. from the 1200 block of Collar Price Road SE. Apparently, the van hit a fire hydrant, went into a ditch and caught fire, Masirovits said.
The fire spread to the surrounding woods.
“It was, maybe, two or three feet off the car, up a tree,” he said.
Vienna firefighters assisted and transported one of the injured, Masirovits said.
