NEWS On the Green learned today that Keith Barrett, who retired in December 2017 as fire chief of Brookfield Township Fire Department, has died.

The photo was taken in November when Brookfield trustees honored Barrett for his 47 years of service. He started as a volunteer in 1970, was hired full time in 1975 and was named chief in 1982.

Brookfield Fire Department released this statement on Facebook: “It is with deep sadness that Retired Chief Keith Barrett has passed away. He was a Chief, mentor and a friend to all of us. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Details for his calling hours and funeral are not known at this time.”

Volunteer fire department Trustee Zachary Holmes posted this on Facebook: “I can’t even think of what to say but thank you for giving some fat redneck kid the opportunity to be in this career and that you will be missed by all R.I.P Chief Barrett.”

Part-time firefighter Rich Fink had this to say on Facebook: “Wow…. So I just was sitting here at work and learned of the Passing of a good friend a boss, a mentor….. I am overwhelmed with emotions as I think about this…. We had our moments where we didn’t see eye to eye but no matter what in the end I still had a friend…. It truly breaks my heart to say it but Farewell Chief Keith Barrett. You will be missed…. Rest In Peace my friend…”
