Brookfield trustees have hired two full-time firefighters to fill a vacancy and prepare for a second one.
On March 4, trustees promoted Nicholas Graf of North Jackson and Shane Stelk of Warren from part-time to full-time status.
The hirings fill the vacancy caused by Jeremy Bahen’s resignation in December, and anticipate the April retirement of Capt. Dave Coffy.
Graf and Stelk will make $34,644 a year.
The overlap with Coffy will allow the department to fill some of the gaps caused by a lack of part-timers to fill available shifts, which has resulted in the frequent closing of Station 51 on Addison Road, said Chief David Masirovits. It also will afford a “smooth transition” once Coffy leaves, he said.
Both men have been part-timers with Brookfield since 2014. Stelk also has worked part time with Howland, Cortland and Girard fire departments.
Graf has been a lieutenant with Berlin Fire and field training officer with the ambulance service American Medical Response.
