Lauren Shugarts said it was weird coming back to Brookfield schools – she’s a 2013 graduate of Brookfield High – as a long-term substitute last year.
“I worked with some of the teachers that I had growing up, so it was definitely interesting, but it was pretty cool, too, that I got to work with them,” she said. “Once I got used to being here every day, it just felt like home.”
Home, it is, now that Shugarts has been hired as a full-time teacher. The University of Akron graduate will teach English language arts to third-graders.
“I wanted to be a teacher, because I worked with kids throughout high school,” Shugarts said following her hiring at the July 16 school board meeting.
“I would always volunteer down the elementary during my study hall, and I just enjoyed seeing that light bulb moment. I wanted to impact children’s lives.”
“During college, I worked a lot in Akron Public Schools. I did my student teaching there. I also subbed throughout Trumbull County, as well, too, so I’ve seen a lot of different schools, different types of areas.”
Shugarts said she will try to make learning fun for her students.
“I want them to be excited to learn,” she said. “I want them to come to my class every day being excited, happy to be there and just have fun learning.”
She will be paid $31,734.
