The mayorship and two council seats are up for election in Yankee Lake, but village voters who go to the voting booth will have no one to choose from.
Which is typical.
“As long as I’ve been here, they just appoint people,” said Trumbull County Board of Elections Executive Director Stephanie Penrose, who has held that role for four years and been employed by the board for 17.
Mayor John Jurko said candidates used to go through the process of circulating petitions to get names on the ballot, but it seemed pointless because there was never any opposition.
“We’ve just been letting it go,” he said. “We’ll just swear everybody in at the first of the year.”
The mayor is paid $600 a year, and council members are paid $500 a year.
