Masury-Brookfield Women’s Club donated Dr. Seuss books to Brookfield Elementary School kindergartners – or, as one teacher called them, kinderreaders – on Dec. 19.
The giveaway puts a local slant on a General Federation of Women’s Club initiative to give children an opportunity to read.
promo“I figured, if we were gonna donate books, I would like them to stay in the community,” said Masury-Brookfield President Ruth Hawkins.
The club used donations and funds raised through a raffle and its annual pie sale to fund the book purchase.
Hawkins wore an enormous “Cat in the Hat” hat to hand out copies of “If I Ran the Circus,” “Horton Hears a Who,” “Oh, the Places You’ll Go” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Other club members wore Christmas colors.
“It was so cool,” Hawkins said of handing out the books. “It was great.”
Hawkins said she would like to have an ongoing relationship with the school and has had an initial chat with Principal Stacey Filicky.
