Vandalism at the Jennings Memorial Park in Masury prompted a call for neighbors to be vigilant, while a separate free food pantry also in the neighborhood has been removed because of waste and littering.

Someone broke the door glass out of the free library in Jennings Park, damaged the shelf that holds books and wrote graffiti on it, said township Trustee Dan Suttles.

Suttles has covered the graffiti and installed a new shelf. He said he is looking for Plexiglass for the door.

“If you get a chance and you see anything like that that happens, stop it,” he asked residents at the June 6 trustees meeting. “Let’s try to take care of that. It’s a nice thing that we have.”

The free food pantry at Mohney’s Heating and Cooling on Second Street, which has been stocked by Brookfield United Methodist Church, has been removed. Pastor Dick Smith said a group of kids had been coming to the pantry, removing items and throwing food on the ground.

The church had made sure there were snacks for the kids at the pantry, he said.

Mohney’s has a security camera directed at the pantry and church officials know who was causing the damage.

“Their thought was, let’s pull it for a while,” Smith said of the Mohney family.

A sign on the side of the building directs people to the free food pantry at the church in Brookfield Center. There have been no problems with that free food pantry as mostly adults access it, Smith said.

The Grove Street church also provides food to families from 10 a.m. to noon the fourth Saturday of the month, attracting 80 to 100 families each month.

promo“Our outdoor pantry isn’t near as important as what we do monthly,” he said.
