A wind-driven brush fire burned about eight to 10 acres of grassland and an unused shed behind Yankee Lake Ballroom on Feb. 21, but avoided many other buildings and pieces of equipment, said Brookfield Fire Chief David Masirovits.

The fire appeared to start at a utility pole, “but we don’t really know exactly how,” Masirovits said.

It burned northward in a C shape, “swept down underneath the old concession stand, came down across the valley, moved up the hill, and eventually consumed this (shed),” he said.

Ohio Edison was brought in to cut the power to the area.

A trailer next to the shed was damaged.

It took about 90 minutes for firefighters from Brookfield, Vienna, Burghill-Vernon, Hubbard and Fowler to extinguish the blaze, and they used about 5,000 gallons of water.
