Sarah Spetsios and Bob Lucarell operate separate businesses out of the former Sikora Gardens property.

Sarah’s Garden Center will hold a grand opening event with food trucks, raffles and giveaways May 4 at 357 Warner Road, Brookfield, the site of the former Sikora Gardens.

Sarah’s Garden Center is one of two businesses now located at the site. The other is Horizon Lawn Care, owned by property owner Bob Lucarell.

Lucarell started Horizon Lawn Care – formerly Horizon Landscaping – in 2001 and had been renting space in Girard. He wanted his own place and thought the former Sikora Gardens property in Brookfield was perfect, but he didn’t want to run a garden center.

Sarah Spetsios did.

The project brings back together two former business partners, both of whom are Brookfield residents.

“We used to be a landscaping company,” Lucarell said. “We were business partners, and then Sarah left to go work for Mill Creek Park. I left landscaping just to do lawn care, lawn fertilizing.”

Although the buildings on the site were in good shape, they weren’t in the condition for which both entities could hit the ground running. Lucarell had to convert parts of two buildings into office space, and he had to have indoor plumbing and heating installed. The greenhouse’s roof needed repaired, and it also had to be hooked up for electricity and water.

“It’s so peaceful here,” Lucarell said of the location. “I see there’s a lot of traffic here. I’m really pleasantly surprised at that. I think she’ll get established rather quickly.”

Sarah’s Garden Center has indoor retail space for plant fertilizer, pots, tools, fountains and seeds; outdoor space for trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and hanging baskets; and also sells bulk mulch, mushroom compost and topsoil, Spetsios said.

“We hope to be like a full-scale (operation), whatever people need for gardening,” she said.

The property covers 14 acres, and Spetsios plans to use more of it by planting a pumpkin patch and maybe some flowers like mums.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week in May and June. Spetsios said she expects to take Sundays off starting in July. Information: 330-469-5054 or on Facebook at Sarah’s Garden Center.

Horizon offers five- and six-step fertilizer programs and lawn aerating to customers from Hermitage to Cortland to Poland, Lucarell said.

“We treat around 1,400 yards,” he said.
