The mother of Brookfield Police Sgt. Aaron Kasiewicz has been entered into a diversion program to resolve a criminal charge stemming from her failing to return her granddaughter to him.

Catherine A. Kasiewicz, 66, of 922 Route 7, Brookfield, entered a guilty plea to a charge of interference with the custody of children May 6 before Trumbull County Central District Court Judge Thomas Campbell.

Kasiewicz will not be sentenced while she is in the six-month diversion program. If she successfully completes the program, the charge “will disappear,” Campbell said.

Aaron Kasiewicz, the Brookfield police chief-elect, filed the charge as a private citizen on July 25 for an incident that occurred July 19.

Aaron Kasiewicz told Campbell he agrees with the resolution.

Catherine Kasiewicz agreed to a 6-month supervision period under the jurisdiction of the court’s probation department, during which she will undergo mental health and drug and alcohol evaluations, perform 20 hours of community service and stay off her son’s property. She also agreed to perform 50 hours of community service instead of having to pay the costs of the supervision.

“This is a good and generous disposition you got,” Campbell said. “Don’t screw it up.”
