Amanda Murphy wanted to hold a touch-a-truck at the Brookfield Branch Library of the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library, but was worried about having enough space in the library parking lot, especially if a fire truck or ambulance comes and has to leave for an emergency call.

That initial thought grew to using part of Grove Street. Then, it grew again. The township trustees, the Brookfield Rotary Club, Brookfield United Methodist Church, Masury-Brookfield Women’s Club and Brookfield Police Department got involved, and the township green became part of the display area for what is now being called a block party. It will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 22.

Murphy did not live in the area when the church held Summerfest – the last time was in 2019 – but she’s heard plenty of people talk about it since she became the library’s manager.

“If people are talking about it, people are missing something like that in the middle of summer,” she said.

Murphy hopes the block party can help fill that void.

These events are planned for the block party, so far:

  • The church will hold a craft and vendor fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Nate the Great will present a magic show at 11 a.m. and make balloon art until 2:30 p.m.
  • Amanda Beagle Vocal Studio will perform family favorites from Disney and other movies and musical theater at 2 p.m.
  • The township trustees will hold Talk With a Trustee from 10 a.m. to noon.
  • Local organizations will staff informational tables.
  • A car cruise with a disc jockey will be held on the green.
  • Food trucks will park on the green.
  • Touch-a-truck will include a police cruiser, a fire vehicle, a tractor-trailer, the library bookmobile, a school bus and construction vehicles. Organizers also are trying to get a race car and specialty vehicles to attend.
  • Kids activities outside the library will include chalk the walk, giant bubbles and a chalk obstacle course.
  • Activities inside the library will include a craft table and coloring sheets for kids, and a photo booth with a campfire backdrop, refreshments and a book sale. Book sale donations are being accepted at the library.

Grove Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking will be available at the library, the church and township property in front of the K’s Bridal. If Briceland Funeral Services does not have a viewing or funeral that day, its parking lot also will be open.
