Brookfield Fire Department has put in service new lapel microphones for their portable radios.

“Very nice microphones,” said Fire Chief David Masirovits. “Big step up from where we were at, as far as volume and functionality.”

The Motorola mics were bought with a $7,650 grant from the Ohio Multi-Agency Radio Communication System, the state-sponsored radio system for emergency responders and state agencies.

The mics have volume controls, flashlights and panic buttons, and can be operated while a firefighter is wearing gloves, Masirovits said. They also stretch outside of a firefighter’s coat, unlike the old mics.

“When a firefighter has their gear on … they pull that out through their coat, button their coat and then the microphone hangs right here,” Masirovits said. “It’s very accessible.”
