A contractor hired by Trumbull County recently installed raised pavement markers on Warren Sharon Road between Yankee Run Road/Brookfield Avenue and Stateline Road, a measure taken to try to improve safety on a stretch of road that was the scene of a double fatal car crash last summer.
Lake Erie Construction installed reflectors set into the center line of the road.
“In the interest of safety, I think this was a no-brainer,” said Trumbull County Deputy Engineer Gary Shaffer.
“We’re very pleased that the county stepped up to help,” said Brookfield Trustee Mark Ferrara. “They realized there are some safety issues there, besides the human error.”
The county had the road lane lines repainted on Aug. 8.
Following the July 16, 2023, crash, township and county officials met to discuss ways to improve safety. Shaffer also said he would like to have some of the utility poles moved farther away from the road. Some of the poles are right at the curb. County officials have begun taking an inventory of the poles, identifying who owns them and their positions in relation to the road, Shaffer said. He said he expects the inventory will be complete around the end of the year, and then officials will reach out to the utility companies to discuss moving the poles. Shaffer added there is no guarantee the utility companies will agree to move the poles, but they have been willing to work with the county in the past.
The county paid about $2,000 to have the raised pavement markers installed, about half of what it expected it would cost, because Lake Erie Construction was already in the area working a much larger job, Shaffer said.
“I got a pretty good deal since they were doing a federal job,” he said.
