Esther Gartland picked “A Season of Gratitude” as the theme for her two-year reign as president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs Ohio, and that gratitude has to start with the members of Ohio’s women’s clubs, she said.

“If we can show our gratitude to our members, and we do truly appreciate all they do, that, I think, is a good way to keep them involved and keep them a part of our federation,” said Gartland at the Masury-Brookfield Women’s Club’s Spring Installation Banquet May 13.

She said she wants to focus on membership and programs for active-duty military, veterans and their families.

“When the military is serving, the entire family is serving,” said Grantland, the 65th president of the Ohio federation.

Part of the service to veterans will include support for Fieldstone Farm Therapeutic Riding Center in Chagrin Falls. In addition to offering equine therapy to veterans, it has programs for kids, schools and special needs children and adults.

The club presented its two annual scholarships to Brookfield High School graduating seniors Telly Hamilton and Ashley Harden. They were honored for their academic and extracurricular achievements and community service activities.

Brookfield Local School District Community Liaison Sabbrina Landers spoke about her job, which is new to the district. She said the majority of her time since she started the job Jan. 3 has been spent tackling issues with student attendance.

“I’m hoping that we can start to change the culture of why school is important to your kids,” she said.

Peggy Bennett, northeast district president, installed the Masury-Brookfield Women’s Club’s officers for 2024-25. They are: President Ruth Hawkins, Vice President Nancy Lees, Recording Secretary Amanda Murphy, Corresponding Secretary Rene’ Martin and Treasurer Carrie Davis.

A 50-50 raffle raised $91 for New Life K-9, which provides service dogs to veterans.

The club resumes meeting after a summer hiatus at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at Belly Buster Sub Shop, 6949 Warren Sharon Road, Brookfield.
