A small fire today caused by melting candle wax likely chased the tenants of an apartment in Hilltop Gardens in Masury.

Damage was minimal but the apartment is currently without a kitchen stove. Brookfield Fire Chief said officials with

Trumbull Metropolitan Housing Authority, which owns and operates Hilltop Gardens, were deciding whether the apartment could be occupied.

The apartment was occupied by two adults and two children who got out safely, Masirovits said.

An occupant was melting candle wax and thought the electric stove had been turned off, but it was left on when the occupants went to take a nap, Masirovits said. Smoke alarms alerted the occupants and they got out, he said.

The heat from the candle wax melted the plastic controls on the stove and ignited an air fryer that was next to the stove, Masirovits said. Flames also went up a wall “just a little bit,” he said.

Firefighters were called at about 3:05 p.m. Brookfield was assisted by firefighters from Sharon, Hubbard and Burghill-Vernon, and Hartford’s truck was dispatched.
