While the bulk of Brookfield’s 2024 paving program is finished or about to be, township officials have approved filing two grant applications for work that would be done next year.

The target streets for 2025 are Beaumont and Nicholas avenues; Campbell, Cleveland, Nellie and Mary Ann streets; and Ohio Street between Stateline Road and Brookfield Avenue.

The engineer’s estimate to mill and pave these streets is $584,000, and the township is seeking an Issue 1 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission for $225,000 to help with the cost. The rest of the money, $359,000, would come from the proceeds of the township road levy.

The trustees also have agreed to make a third attempt at teaming with Hartford trustees to apply for an Issue I grant to help pave King Graves Road. The hope is to pave the road between Warner Road and Albright McKay Road in 2025, and from Albright McKay to Route 7 in 2026.

The townships have agreed to ask for an Issue 1 grant of $150,000 for 2025, with each township kicking in $75,000.

The townships have increased the amount of money they are willing to pay each year and just missed the cut for funding last year, said Brookfield Road Supt. Jaime Fredenburg. A committee managed by the Eastgate Regional Council of Governments awards the grants.

Fredenburg told the trustees Sept. 18 that the amount of money requested from OPWC exceeds the amount available and he expects the township will be awarded one of the two requests. If the township is not funded for both projects, he suggested the money that would have been put into the one that was not funded be used for maintenance activities next summer to prolong the life of roads until they can be paved in the future.
