A Hermitage man who allowed his grandson to steal fire extinguishers has been sentenced in one case filed in Trumbull County and two in Mercer County.

Douglas Valimont, 73, pleaded guilty Aug. 14 in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to attempted breaking and entering. He was sentenced Oct. 16 to 1 year of probation to be served the same time as the sentences in his Pennsylvania cases.

Valimont pleaded guilty Aug. 7 to two counts of theft in cases filed by Hermitage and Hempfield Township police and was sentenced Aug. 29 to 1 year of probation and ordered to pay $645 restitution.

The grandson, who was prosecuted in juvenile courts, stole a fire extinguisher Nov. 20, 2023, from Masury Laundromat, 8236 Ulp St., Masury, and five from Brookfield Local School District buses Jan. 9 at the bus garage, 7015 Grove St., Brookfield, Brookfield police said.

The boy also stole seven extinguishers from Student Transportation of America buses and a gas pump station in Hermitage, and 13 from Anderson Bus and Tour in Sugar Grove Township, Hermitage police said.

Hermitage police found dozens of fire extinguishers “laying around” Valimont’s property, police said.

Valimont “told the officer that it became easier to just let his grandson take them, as the grandson would throw a fit if he was not allowed and destroy his truck,” Brookfield police said.
