A man charged by Brookfield police with felony and misdemeanor counts in eight separate instances is in Trumbull County custody after a lengthy prosecution in Pennsylvania.
Wayne S. Sailar, 48, is in Trumbull County Jail awaiting a competency evaluation. His defense attorney requested the evaluation, and Trumbull County Eastern District Court Judge Marty Nosich ordered it on Dec. 5.
Brookfield police charged Sailar for incidents that occurred between October 2020 and December 2022, mostly dealing with the theft of motor vehicles or off-road vehicles.
Sailar was the subject of a two-state manhunt that coincided with his arrest Dec. 2, 2022, in Hermitage, where he was found sleeping on a stolen ATV in woods near Orange Drive.
Because Sailar was arrested in Pennsylvania, Keystone State authorities had the first chance to prosecute him. He was charged by Farrell and Sharon police for incidents Aug. 24 and Nov. 29, 2022, and the prosecution was drawn out by competency issues.
Sailar ended up pleading guilty on Sept. 9 to a charge of fleeing police in the Farrell case and an accident involving damage to attended vehicle or property in the Sharon case. He was sentenced Sept. 24 to the 658 days he had served in jail and 1 year of probation.
