The use of artificial intelligence is exploding and could have a profound aspect on many aspects of society in the coming years.
Brookfield Local School District, like many other schools, has adopted a policy on AI.
AI is, according to Merriam Webster, “the capability of computer systems or algorithms to imitate intelligent human behavior.”
While you hear horror stories of AI being used in educational settings to write papers for students, the policy states that there is a time and place for the use of AI.
“It basically says the board recognizes the positive impact of artificial intelligence technology that it may have on the district’s educational program and operations,” Brookfield Supt. Toby Gibson told the school board Jan. 15.
The superintendent is authorized to “support” the use of AI in ways that are “consistent” with the district’s mission, goals and operational integrity, according to the policy.
The policy requires AI to be used in accordance with other district policies, such as the technology policy, Gibson said. The AI policy also states that it will have to change because AI will change.
“We recognize that it can be positive as long as it’s used in accordance to board policy,” Gibson said.
