Work has begun to prepare George A. Nicholas Field in Brookfield Alumni Stadium for the installation of artificial turf.

Freedy Construction LLC of Boardman has removed the goal posts and built an equipment access road across the track to minimize damage to the existing artificial surface track. The company said it will start working on the field as soon as Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District approves the plan.

Freedy was hired by the school board May 2. It’s bid of $607,775 was the lowest of two.

Once Freedy is done with the excavation and drainage work, AstroTurf Corp. will install the turf. The tentative start date for the turf installation is July 21, school officials said. AstroTurf was hired based on a bid of $452,592.

G&J Fencing of Transfer has been hired to install 800 feet of six-foot-high, vinyl-coated, chain-link fence at the stadium for $26,200.
