Brookfield lost a daycare center when Peas in a Pod closed a year ago, but a new daycare and preschool will open for business July 21.

Lynne Nagy is opening Lynne’s Little Daycare and Preschool in the building previously occupied by Peas in a Pod, 6900 Cherry St., which has a Hubbard mailing address.

“I’m excited for people to see it,” Nagy said.

Nagy and her husband, Bill, renovated the building, installing new flooring, lighting and bathroom fixtures, knocking out a wall or two to enlarge rooms and making cosmetic improvements.

“I want people to know it’s not the same place,” Nagy said. “It’s completely different.”

Nagy’s been in the daycare business since opening a home daycare 25 years ago. She moved to rented space in Hubbard United Methodist Church in 2019, but has been looking for a new place so she can have control over it. The Nagys bought the former New Dawn Salon at 250 W. Liberty St., Hubbard, in July 2022, with plans to renovate it, when the Peas in a Pod building became available.

Although Nagy had heard the Peas building was small, she was surprised at how roomy it was and bought it, knowing she could get it open more quickly than the Hubbard location, which remains under renovation.

“I like that it’s kind of nestled here,” Nagy said. “It’s quiet.”

Nestled on nearly two acres, the property gives Nagy ample outside play area for the kids – there will be two playgrounds – and expansion room if the operation takes off.

The Brookfield location is licensed for 49 kids, and some of her 65 Hubbard kids will move to the Brookfield location because it is more convenient for their parents, she said. It will be staffed by six people and Nagy will manage the Brookfield location directly while her administrator, Heather Karlovic, will manage the Hubbard site.

Nagy will offer before- and after-school care and preschool, following a state-required curriculum for preschool students.

“We’re not just a glorified babysitter,” she said.

While running a daycare and preschool is not an “easy breezy” job, the benefits far outweigh the negatives, said Nagy, whose first grandchild will be with her at the Brookfield site.

“The kids are just so receptive,” she said. “You walk in the building and they want to hug you and tell you that they love you. I love that. If I’m having a crappy day and I walk into work, I’m not having a crappy day anymore.”

Lynne’s Little Daycare and Preschool will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. It will be closed on major holidays and one week in the summer.
