The official date for candidates for the Nov. 4 election to have their petitions in isn’t until Aug. 6 but four sitting elected officials in Brookfield are certified to be on the ballot, according to the Trumbull County Board of Elections.

Brookfield trustees Dan Suttles and Mark Ferrara both are running for election. Suttles is completing his second four-year term and Ferrara his first.

Brookfield Board of Education members Jerry Necastro and Derek Mihalcin want to re-up. Necastro, who is in his second stint on the board, was appointed in December 2020 to fill the position of a school board member who resigned, and was elected to a four-year term in November 2021. Mihalcin, the current board president, was appointed to a two-year term in January 2021 to fill a position that no one ran for the previous November. He was elected to a two-year term in November 2023.

Ronda Bonekovic, the longest serving member of the school board with more than two decades of service, also is running again. She said July 24 she hadn’t turned her paperwork in, yet.

Brookfield does not have any levies on in November, but there are two levies on the ballot that could impact Brookfield residents.

Hartford Township is seeking a renewal of its 2-mill, five-year fire levy. The levy generates about $92,000 a year and is used to pay Brookfield Fire Department for fire and emergency medical services, and to maintain Hartford’s fire station and fire truck, said Trustee Phil Wilhelm. The levy costs a property with an assessed value of $100,000 $49 a year. The three-year contract between the townships ends Dec. 31.

On July 24, the Trumbull County commissioners approved the placement of a 2-mill, 5-year renewal levy for Trumbull County Children’s Services Board on the Nov. 4 ballot. The levy raises $7 million a year and it costs a property with an appraised value of $100,000 $47 a year, commissioners said.
