Firefighters rescued a tortoise from its burning enclosure Feb. 20 in Brookfield.
A heat lamp or light ignited the wood enclosure, which measured about 8 feet by 2 feet, in the basement, said Brookfield Fire Chief David Masirovits. The first firefighters on scene quickly extinguished the fire, he said.
The home is at 393 Sunset Drive, owned by Luca and Stephen Franz. The family got two dogs out safely and there were no human injuries, Masirovits said.
The family was able to return to the home, and fire damage was limited to the enclosure, the chief said. The family will have to contend with a terrible smoke smell for a while, he said.
Firefighters from Vienna and Hubbard assisted.
