Brookfield Historical Society will sponsor a headstone cleaning event at 11 a.m. June 20 at Brookfield Township Cemetery. Volunteers also will plant flowers on the graves of Revolutionary War veterans in honor of America 250.
The society will provide brushes and the headstone cleaner D2, a biological solution. Volunteers need only bring gloves, organizers said.
Christine Novicky of the Vienna Historical Society told the Brookfield society in a 2022 presentation that cleaners such as bleach, soap, vinegar and household detergents get inside the porous headstones and break down the stone. D2 will remove mold, algae and mildew, is simple and safe to use and works over time with rain helping it do its job, Novicky said.
The society plans to focus on the graves of Revolutionary War soldiers and will move onto other graves in the older section of the cemetery as time permits.
