Brookfield Historical Society has reprinted Joseph Tarkanick’s book of Brookfield history, “The Brookfield That Was.”
“We’ve had so many requests for it,” said society President Barbara Stevens.
The book was originally published in 1976 to coincide with Brookfield’s celebration of America’s bicentennial. The book’s introduction states that the book was an attempt to “avoid the sometime boring phases of history and only relate the more interesting facts and events.”
An expanded second edition was published in 1994. The society has reprinted the second edition.
“We cleaned up some pictures, made a couple corrections,” Stevens said. “Basically, it’s the same book.”
The society raised about $2,000 in advertisements and sponsorships to offset the printing cost. Proceeds from sales go to the society.
Emmy Varner, an AmeriCorps volunteer who spent the last few months with the Trumbull County Historical Society and other county historical societies, was instrumental in preparing the book for publication, Stevens said.
“She worked on that tirelessly, cleaning it up and clearing up pictures,” Stevens said.
