The Brookfield Board of Education approved a new three-year contract with the teacher’s union on June 24. The Brookfield Federation of Teachers had ratified that pact on June 4, said union President Jennifer Jerek.
“The contract includes updates and clarifications to some existing language, as well as a restructuring of the teacher salary schedule to establish a starting salary of $40,000,” said Supt. Toby Gibson.
The starting salary for the school year that just ended was $36,347.
“The revised pay scale is designed to help attract qualified candidates for future openings and improve teacher retention,” Gibson said. “The agreement also includes 2-percent salary increases in the second and third years of the contract. District and BFT leadership worked collaboratively throughout the negotiations to reach an agreement that supports both our educators and the long-term success of the district.”
Jerek called the process “productive and collaborative.”
Board President Derek Mihalcin agreed.
“It was my first time being part of that,” he said. “You hear stories. It was very professional on both sides, I thought. It went really well.”
The contract runs from July 1 to June 30, 2029. The union has about 80 members.
Negotiations with the Brookfield Association of School Employees, the union of non-teachers, were to begin July 6, said district Treasurer Jordan Weber. That contract expired June 30.
