Brookfield Board of Education hired Julie Sloan on Jan. 13 as district treasurer.
Sloan comes from Newton Falls Exempted Village School District, where she has been treasurer since July 2018.
Sloan, of Bristolville, previously worked as assistant treasurer at Champion schools, assistant to the treasurer at Trumbull County Educational Service Center and payroll clerk at Bristol schools.
On Feb. 1, Sloan will replace Craig Yaniglos, who is leaving Brookfield to take another job.
“I’ve known Craig professionally,” Sloan said. “He’s shared a lot about the district with me. It’s exciting to me that they’re moving in a positive direction.”
She said she likes Brookfield’s willingness to report its enrollment – 1,016 – at a time when many schools are not, its efforts to improve its science, technology, engineering and math offerings and its pursuit of grants.
“It’s fresh,” she said. “I feel like there are a lot of really great things happening here. I think it’s a good time to be part of it.”
Sloan’s reference letters commend her honesty, flexibility, knowledge and dedication.
“She stepped into an unauditable fiscal office when she started her treasurer career at Newton Falls,” said Dawn Meeks, treasurer of Sebring schools, who has mentored Sloan. “She has successfully transformed that situation into an organized and fiscally responsible office.”
“I am passionate about it,” Sloan said of her work. “I take it on like it’s not just a job – it’s part of who I am. I plan to bring my own passion and my own excitement.”
Sloan said she is tight-fisted with finances.
promo“You have to spend money, but I want to know more about it first, and I want to make sure that it is an important purchase,” she said. “I ask a lot of questions. I just want to know that they’re getting their bang for the buck, or that they’re making the right choices.”
Sloan, one of six who applied, was granted a 3.5-year contract that pays her $67,000 each year.
