A Sharon woman was sentenced to more than 2 months in jail for driving while under the influence of drugs when she had two children in her car.
Abagail M. Boles, 31, was arrested March 8 in the 900 block of South Irvine Avenue in Masury, Brookfield police said. An employee of a business reported that an intoxicated woman had gotten into a car that contained two children, police said. Police arrived on the scene just as Boles was about to drive away and stopped her, police said.
Boles made quick movements, talked fast, and had white powder around her left nostril, which are indications of drug use, police said. She said she had last used heroin a couple of days ago, police said.
When asked about the children, a boy and a girl, both 3 years old, Boles said she had been watching them for a friend.
The kids’ mother, a Sharon woman, told police that she had left the kids with Boles that morning so that she could attend a court hearing. According to Pennsylvania court records, the woman had a hearing in Mercer on Pennsylvania State Police charges of endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangerment.
The mother said that Boles was not high when she left for court, and that Boles was not supposed to take the kids anywhere, police said.
Boles was wanted on warrants from Ohio and Pennsylvania, and a search of her car turned up a plastic bag with apparent drug residue in it, and a torch lighter “consistent with methamphetamine use,” police said.
When asked about the residue around her nostril, Boles told police, “That’s the fentanyl from last night,” police said.
promoA passenger, Robert L. Mitchell, 50, of Sharon, was charged with possession of drug abuse instruments after he claimed that a meth pipe found in the car was his, police said.
Boles appeared in court March 9 and pleaded guilty to charges of one count each of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia, and two counts of endangering children. A charge of driving under suspension was dismissed.
Trumbull County Eastern District Court Judge Marty D. Nosich sentenced Boles to 70 days in jail with 3 days’ credit, fines totaling $390, 1 year probation and a 2-year driver’s license suspension. Nosich added that the Ohio Department of Transportation could add to the time of the license suspension if Boles did not have insurance at the time she was arrested.
Boles also pleaded guilty to a charge of theft, stemming from a May 28, 2020, incident at another store in Masury. Nosich issued a suspended sentence.
Boles has pending cases in Mercer County on charges of drug possession and retail theft.
