The driver of the pickup that plowed into the Brookfield Township community events sign Saturday told police his steering wheel locked up, Brookfield police said.
Aubrey L. Hoffman, 82, of 6179 Warren Sharon Road, Brookfield, will be charged with failure to control, police said.
The crash occurred at just before 5:30 p.m. when Hoffman’s truck was northbound on Route 7, on the east side of green in the Brookfield Center. Hoffman attempted to stop the truck as it jumped the curb onto the green, police said.
Hoffman had cuts on his hands and neck and was taken to a hospital by Brookfield Fire-Rescue, police said.
The truck knocked the sign free of its brick pillars and knocked over the pillars.
Trustee Dan Suttles said the electronic sign, which was installed in October 2018, is insured.
