A Brookfield Avenue, Masury, resident is staying with family since a fire Feb. 21 that damaged the front and first floor of her century home.

The fire was noticed by a beer deliveryman at the Clark Bar, across the street from the home at 775 Brookfield Avenue, who alerted bar employees, said Brookfield Fire Chief Dave Masirovits. A patron of the bar ran across the street and alerted the two women who were inside the home. They were in the kitchen at the rear of the home. The women got out safely, and there were no human or pet injuries, Masirovits said.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause, but there is nothing to indicate arson, Masirovits said.

The blaze started on the front porch.

“It breached that front window and made its way into the first floor, ignited all the furniture in the living room and was contained to that room,” the chief said.

Masirovits estimated the loss to structure and contents at $70,000.

“It took a well-coordinated effort, and yesterday it was very well executed,” Masirovits said on Feb. 22. “Our crews and the mutual aid companies did an excellent job. That fire was through the window when we got there and into that room. We were able to make the stop on it both to the interior and the exterior.”

Firefighters from Hubbard, Sharon and Burghill Vernon assisted.

The Trumbull County auditor’s website lists the house’s owner as Elnora Kelley. The auditor lists the house as having been built in 1890.
