Brookfield police recently arrested a Sharon man for drunken driving, but the man was not driving a car or a truck – he was driving a three-wheeled electric scooter.

Douglas Tenney, 61, was seen by police operating the scooter March 5 in the area of Warren Sharon Road and Yankee Run Road, and was impeding traffic, police said.

Police said they pulled over Tenney in the 7800 block of Warren Sharon Road. Tenney told them he was on his way to his camp on Scoville North Road in Burghill.

The scooter was not registered and Tenney’s driver’s license is suspended, police said. Because of that, they impounded the scooter, police said.

Tenney smelled of alcohol and admitted he had had a rum and coke before leaving home, police said.
During an inventory of the scooter, a water bottle that smelled strongly of alcohol was found under the seat, and the contents were dumped at the roadside, police said.

Police charged Tenney with drunken driving, driving under suspension – from a previous impaired driving offense – and driving an unregistered vehicle. Tenney pleaded not guilty at his arraignment March 7 in Trumbull County Eastern District Court.

Judge Marty Nosich told Tenney he could get his scooter back once he pays tow and impound fees.
