About 18 months ago, Brookfield Fire Department received a grant to buy nine bullet-proof vests for firefighters to wear if they have to enter an active shooter, standoff, or other potentially dangerous situation.

Township trustees in February approved the fire department buying seven ballistic helmets with shields to go with the vests.

The helmets will be bought from Atomic Defense for $4,719.

“These helmets will completely cover the wearer’s head, their ears, part of their neck and then the face shield is actually about 1 ½ inches thick and it’s bullet-proof as well,” said Fire Chief David Masirovits.

The department outfitted the vests with emergency medical supplies.

“I hope we never have to use them,” said Trustee Mark Ferrara.
