Jenna Omar, the Brookfield Middle School student who saved her friend from choking during lunch Sept. 22 at the school, will be presented an Act of Courage Award by the American Red Cross of Greater Akron and the Mahoning Valley.

Jenna will receive the honor for her heroism March 7 during a dinner at the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, the Red Cross said.

Other honorees will include three nursing students who cared for a man they found in a roadway who was having a seizure, a woman who used her dog’s leash to save a woman stranded in the Cuyahoga River and a man who pulled the driver of an overturned car from the wreckage and performed CPR on him.

Jenna used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a piece of breaded shrimp that was blocking the airway of her friend, Luciana Kolat. Jenna’s actions were feted by the Brookfield Board of Education, school administrators, Brookfield trustees and Fire Chief David Masirovits at an Oct. 18 school board meeting.
